Lesson 02 of 13

The New Testament Church

Apostolic patterns for worship, community, formation, and mission

A subject-specific welcome from

Pastor Travis

This lesson matters because the New Testament church devoted itself to apostolic teaching, fellowship, shared meals, prayer, generosity, spiritual power, ordered leadership, and gospel mission. My prayer is that you receive this truth as grace, respond in obedience, and allow it to deepen both your relationship with God and your participation in His purpose. — Pastor Travis Morgan

The big idea

The New Testament church devoted itself to apostolic teaching, fellowship, shared meals, prayer, generosity, spiritual power, ordered leadership, and gospel mission.

Read the Word

Key Scriptures

Acts 2:37–47

summarizes the practices and shared life of the first believers.

Acts 4:23–37

joins corporate prayer, bold witness, power, and generosity.

Acts 13:1–4

shows worshiping leaders hearing and obeying the Spirit’s mission.

1 Corinthians 14:26–40

orders participatory, Spirit-led gatherings for edification.

Titus 1:5–9

establishes qualified local leadership.

01

Devoted to a shared rhythm

Acts presents devotion, not casual preference. Teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayer formed a stable environment for growth.

These practices are adaptable across cultures and church sizes; their substance must remain even when methods change.

02

Spirit-led and ordered

The early church expected gifts, healing, prophecy, direction, and bold witness. Yet spiritual activity was tested and ordered for peace and edification.

Spirit and structure are not enemies. Healthy order protects participation and keeps Jesus central.

03

Local life and outward mission

Churches gathered in homes and public spaces, appointed leaders, cared for needs, and sent workers. Growth did not remove intimacy.

A small church can embody New Testament life through simple relationships, shared responsibility, and outward focus.

Grace Revealed

Grace brings truth into life.

Grace creates a devoted community and supplies the Spirit’s power; church life is a response to what Christ has already done.

Knowing Him

Every truth leads toward God.

The New Testament pattern gives repeated places to encounter Christ among His people rather than chase novelty.

Why this matters for salvation

God’s teaching serves His saving purpose.

These practices establish converts in truth, guard holiness, sustain perseverance, and send the saving gospel outward.

Lesson notes

Remember these truths.

  • Devotion is deeper than occasional attendance.
  • Word and Spirit belong together.
  • Order serves edification.
  • Leadership is qualified by character.
  • Local fellowship serves global mission.

Respond to the Word

Reflect and apply.

  1. Which apostolic practice is weakest in your life?
  2. How can a small church deepen fellowship?
  3. Where is order needed?
  4. What can you contribute when believers gather?
  5. How should Destiny remain outward-facing?
Pray the truth

Lord Jesus, teach me the truth of the new testament church. Devote yourself to teaching, fellowship, prayer, generosity, Spirit-led participation, and mission. Let Your grace form me, draw me nearer to You, and make my life useful in Your saving purpose. Amen.
