Communion is the church’s covenant meal in which believers remember Jesus’ sacrificial death, proclaim His return, examine themselves, discern His body, and share one bread as one people.

Luke 22:14–20

A meal of remembrance

Jesus gives bread and cup as signs that interpret His death. Remembrance is active covenant loyalty, not nostalgic thought.

At the Table the church retells the gospel: the body given, blood poured out, sins forgiven, and new covenant opened.

Participation and proclamation

Communion declares that believers share in Christ and with one another. One bread confronts division, contempt, and exclusion.

The meal looks backward to the cross, inward through examination, around to the body, and forward to Jesus’ return.

Examine without hiding

Examination is not a demand for sinless perfection. It calls for truthful repentance, reconciliation, and discerning the holy meaning of the meal.

Pastoral leadership should explain Communion clearly and practice it reverently without unnecessary complexity.

Grace Revealed

Grace brings truth into life.

Jesus gives Himself before giving the meal. Communion receives and remembers grace rather than reenacting the sacrifice.

Knowing Him

Every truth leads toward God.

The Table is a repeated encounter with Christ’s covenant love and the people He purchased.

Why this matters for salvation

God’s teaching serves His saving purpose.

Communion proclaims the saving death of Jesus, calls for repentance and unity, and sustains hope until He comes.

Pray the truth

Lord Jesus, teach me the truth of communion. Come with faith, gratitude, self-examination, reconciliation, and concern for the whole body. Let Your grace form me, draw me nearer to You, and make my life useful in Your saving purpose. Amen.
