Lesson 10 of 13

Fivefold Ministry

Christ’s equipping gifts to His church

A subject-specific welcome from

Pastor Travis

This lesson matters because apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers are gifts of the ascended Christ who equip all saints for ministry, protect maturity, and help the church participate in Jesus’ mission. My prayer is that you receive this truth as grace, respond in obedience, and allow it to deepen both your relationship with God and your participation in His purpose. — Pastor Travis Morgan

The big idea

Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers are gifts of the ascended Christ who equip all saints for ministry, protect maturity, and help the church participate in Jesus’ mission.

Read the Word

Key Scriptures

Ephesians 4:7–16

names five equipping gifts and their purpose in maturity.

1 Corinthians 12:27–31

places apostolic and prophetic ministry among diverse gifts.

Acts 13:1–4

shows prophets and teachers serving in a sending church.

2 Timothy 4:1–5

charges an apostolic coworker to teach and do evangelistic work.

1 Peter 5:1–4

defines shepherding under the Chief Shepherd.

01

Gifts from the ascended Christ

These ministries are not celebrity ranks. Christ gives people to serve His body, and their authority remains accountable to Him and Scripture.

Different gifts establish, reveal, proclaim, shepherd, and explain, yet the New Testament often shows overlap rather than rigid branding.

02

Equipping, not replacing, the saints

The goal is that every believer becomes equipped for ministry. Leaders who gather all work to themselves contradict Ephesians 4.

Success is measured by a maturing, serving, truth-speaking body—not dependency on a platform.

03

Recognize function with humility

Character, fruit, doctrine, tested calling, and service matter more than self-appointed titles. A small church should recognize actual function without prematurely building elaborate offices.

Destiny can receive outside ministry while keeping local pastoral responsibility clear and relationships accountable.

Grace Revealed

Grace brings truth into life.

Christ provides the equipping His church needs. No congregation must manufacture every gift internally or imitate a larger church’s structure.

Knowing Him

Every truth leads toward God.

Each ministry gift reveals something of Jesus: the Sent One, prophetic Word, good-news Herald, Shepherd, and Teacher.

Why this matters for salvation

God’s teaching serves His saving purpose.

Equipping guards believers from deception, forms maturity, mobilizes ministry, and extends the saving gospel.

Lesson notes

Remember these truths.

  • Christ gives equipping ministers.
  • Their purpose is mature saints.
  • Functions may overlap.
  • Character matters more than title.
  • Structure should follow proven need.

Respond to the Word

Reflect and apply.

  1. Which equipping function has helped you?
  2. How can leaders avoid dependency?
  3. What should precede title recognition?
  4. What does Destiny need at its present stage?
  5. How will you use what you receive?
Pray the truth

Lord Jesus, teach me the truth of fivefold ministry. Honor genuine equipping gifts, receive their ministry, test character and doctrine, and become equipped to serve. Let Your grace form me, draw me nearer to You, and make my life useful in Your saving purpose. Amen.
