Destiny Grow · The Kingdom Story

Lesson 09 of 12

Church & Kingdom

The community of the King serving His reign

A subject-specific welcome from

Pastor Travis

This lesson matters because the church is the new-covenant community gathered by the kingdom gospel, indwelt by the Spirit, and sent to announce and embody God’s reign while awaiting its complete manifestation. My prayer is that you receive this truth as grace, respond in obedience, and allow it to deepen both your relationship with God and your participation in His purpose. — Pastor Travis Morgan

The big idea

The church is the new-covenant community gathered by the kingdom gospel, indwelt by the Spirit, and sent to announce and embody God’s reign while awaiting its complete manifestation.

Read the Word

Key Scriptures

Matthew 16:13–19

connects Jesus’ church with kingdom authority.

Acts 1:1–8

joins kingdom teaching, Spirit power, and witness.

Colossians 1:9–20

places the church under the preeminent reconciler and King.

1 Peter 2:4–12

calls the holy people to declare God’s excellencies among nations.

Revelation 1:4–6

names the redeemed church a kingdom and priests.

01

Related but not identical

The kingdom is God’s reign; the church is the people gathered under and sent by that reign. The church witnesses to the kingdom but cannot reduce it to institutional success.

This prevents both neglecting the church and treating church growth as identical with God’s victory.

02

Signs of the reign

The church announces the gospel, baptizes, teaches, prays, heals, delivers, reconciles, serves the poor, practices justice, worships, and forms holy community.

These are signs and foretastes, not claims that final restoration has already arrived.

03

Priestly public witness

A kingdom-priest people represents God before the world and carries the world in prayer before God.

Faithful presence in neighborhoods, work, family, and public life should reflect Jesus without grasping worldly domination.

Grace Revealed

Grace brings truth into life.

God grants a kingdom and makes former outsiders into a priestly people who participate in what He is doing.

Knowing Him

Every truth leads toward God.

The church knows the King together through Word, Spirit, Table, prayer, worship, and shared obedience.

Why this matters for salvation

God’s teaching serves His saving purpose.

The church proclaims salvation, forms disciples, embodies reconciliation, and anticipates the kingdom’s final saving completion.

Lesson notes

Remember these truths.

  • Kingdom is God’s reign.
  • Church is the kingdom people.
  • The church gives signs and foretastes.
  • Final restoration remains future.
  • Witness rejects domination.

Respond to the Word

Reflect and apply.

  1. Where do church and kingdom differ?
  2. What sign can Destiny embody?
  3. How can public witness remain servant-shaped?
  4. What does priestly identity require?
  5. Where are you sent?
Pray the truth

Lord Jesus, teach me the truth of church & kingdom. Belong deeply to the church, seek the kingdom first, serve neighbors, and point every sign toward Jesus the King. Let Your grace form me, draw me nearer to You, and make my life useful in Your saving purpose. Amen.
