Lesson 07 of 10Recognizing His voice with Scripture as the governing standard
God speaks, and His written Word is the trustworthy governing standard by which every claimed impression must be tested. This lesson will help you become attentive without becoming careless—expecting the Spirit to illuminate Scripture while refusing voices that contradict what God has already revealed. — Pastor Travis Morgan

God speaks authoritatively through Scripture, which the Spirit illuminates and applies; every impression, prophecy, counsel, or claimed voice must be tested by the character, gospel, and teaching of the written Word.
Read the Word
describes inspired Scripture equipping God’s people.
centers God’s climactic revelation in the Son.
portrays sheep recognizing and following the Shepherd.
commends testing teaching by Scripture.
commands openness and careful testing.
Scripture is breathed by God and profitable for doctrine, correction, and formation. We do not wait for a private voice before obeying what God has already made clear. The Bible gives the vocabulary, story, gospel, and moral boundaries for discernment.
God’s revelation culminates in Jesus. The Spirit will never lead away from the character, lordship, or gospel of Christ revealed in Scripture.
The Spirit opens understanding, convicts, brings texts to remembrance, and applies truth to present situations. This is not adding a new Bible; it is living engagement with the Word already given.
Read whole passages, observe context, compare Scripture with Scripture, and ask how the text points toward God’s redemptive purpose. A verse detached from context can become a mirror of our own desires.
Scripture commands both openness and testing. Examine whether an impression agrees with Scripture, exalts Jesus, produces holy fruit, survives wise community, and avoids manipulation. Important decisions should not rest on one untested feeling.
God’s voice may comfort or confront, but it will not flatter sin. Humility says, “I believe the Lord may be showing me,” and remains correctable.
Grace Revealed
God graciously gives an objective Word rather than leaving us trapped inside subjective impressions. He also gives the Spirit and community to help us understand and obey.
Knowing Him
The Shepherd is known through repeated attention to His revealed character. Familiarity with Scripture helps the heart recognize what sounds like Jesus and reject counterfeit voices.
Why this matters for salvation
Faith comes by hearing God’s Word. Scripture reveals the gospel, makes wise unto salvation, corrects error, and forms perseverance. Discernment protects believers from deception that can destroy faith.
