His Spirit marks us as His
Romans 8 makes a searching statement: anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him. Receiving the Spirit concerns ownership and relationship. God gives not merely an influence but His own Spirit, marking a people as Christ’s.
Belonging brings assurance and responsibility. We are no longer our own. The Spirit bears witness to adoption and leads the children of God. Identity is received before it is performed, yet received identity reshapes how we live.
Sealed by God
A seal in the ancient world could identify ownership, authenticate, and secure. Paul says believers are sealed with the promised Holy Spirit and sealed for the day of redemption. God places His mark upon what He has purchased.
The seal is not permission for careless living. Ephesians immediately connects it to truthfulness, reconciled relationships, honest work, gracious speech, forgiveness, and refusing to grieve the Spirit. Ownership produces holiness.
The earnest of our inheritance
The Greek arrabōn means pledge, deposit, or first installment guaranteeing the remainder. The Spirit is a present experience of the coming inheritance. We genuinely taste the life of the age to come, but we still await resurrection and the redemption of the body.
This protects us from two errors: acting as though nothing has happened yet, or acting as though redemption is already complete. We have the Spirit now; we still groan for fullness. Christian hope is Spirit-filled and future-facing.
He is coming for what belongs to Him
Ephesians speaks of the redemption of the purchased possession. Christ purchased a people by His blood, places His Spirit within them, and will return to complete what He began. The Spirit makes the return of Jesus personal: the Owner is coming for His own.
Hope therefore produces readiness, not speculation. We honor His ownership, follow the Spirit, care for the body, endure suffering, and live toward resurrection.
Grace Revealed
Grace does not hide truth. Grace reveals and enables.
God does not ask us to produce our own guarantee. He places His Spirit within us as His pledge. Assurance rests in His action and promise, not our ability to generate certainty.
Knowing Him
Doctrine leads toward intimacy.
The seal is relational: we are His. The earnest is experiential: His future is already present within us by the Spirit. Intimacy now is the beginning of an inheritance in which God will dwell with His people without interruption.
Why this matters for salvation
Every truth belongs within God’s saving purpose.
The Spirit identifies those who belong to Christ, empowers holy living, and guarantees redemption still to come. Salvation includes present indwelling and future resurrection; the Spirit joins both dimensions.
